Because in food I trust. In all forms and shapes.

With a view. Kolonāde

With a view. Kolonāde

Situated in the heart of Riga with the best view possible – the Freedom Monument, Opera, and Old Town, the restaurant Kolonade is not just about great views. Since the day it opened, there have been some changes in everything – interior, design, and menu – but the best is that all of them have been only for the better. If a few years ago it was a great place to eat, good food, great view, and attentive staff, then today it offers a whole lot more.

The food, which still is great and maybe even greater, thanks to chef Ainars Volodka and his team (and a tiny bit of me), has changed its direction focusing more on marrying something from French brasserie/bistro with Latvian cuisine. The menu offers home-made pork and rabbit terrine, tartare, and fish soup, which is more French, but the ingredients are all Latvian. There is local ostrich, pork, and fish from the market just to mention a few things. The same applies to all the other dishes. Crème Brule is made from organic eggs, the quinoa is grown in Latvian fields: the same goes for mushrooms, lettuce, greens, veggies, and berries. There is nothing too complicated, but everything is very beautifully done.

So, if you are looking for some beetroot and home-smoked goat cheese salad or a local fishplate, duck confit with home made fries and divine free-range chicken minestrone, or (my favorite) veal cutlet with mushrooms, then Kolonade is the place. Do not forget about the desserts, especially the one and only Eton Mess with seasonal berries or chocolate cake with halva.

There is more. Kolonade is also great if you are looking for the world famous Cruffin, pizza, pasta, or a simple salad accompanied by perfectly-made Illy coffee – cappuccino or espresso. No coffee on your mind? Then dig into their fantastic wine menu and have a glass with an appetizer plate.

By the way, their sommelier Jānis Gailis has done a great job creating the wine list that has won the Wine Spectator Award already a few years in a row. That is a great achievement and looking at the Italian-inspired, but global wine list – you will see why. This is one of my favorite spots in Riga to sit back and relax (no wonder my last two book presentations were here).
