Cafe with a view. Romas cafe
Pasta with baked potato skins and smoked pork, duck breast with seasons veggies, tonka bean ice cream (one of the rare places in Latvia that uses tonka beans), salad with nuts, bruschetta with our local fish, burrata and cakes, yes cakes. Actually, cakes are the ones that started the place. The owners of Promenade hotel ( wanted a nice place were cakes are queens). They found one of the most romantic places in Liepaja – Rome garden square, that used to be one of the top selling points in ancient Liepaja. Horses were tied to the fountain (to drink), that is now in the centre of the the square and every picture taken here, while owner did the deals of the century. They found a place – not so big but chic enough to make a cafe. They renovated, delivered the antiques starting from lamps to furniture and small tings and opened the door. Everyone talked about it and loved it.
Then they did some Italian food but today there is much more. With the new and talanted chef Sintija Gintere and her fresh (I mean young people) team they are up to discover worlds foods and mix them with local recipes and produce. Like the potato skin pasta, that was created inspired by fall potato harvest, where her family (as many other families do) make the potatoes in the fire until they get black sking and super sweet and fluffy inside.
It is a treat to sit outside while it is summer and warm, but I just love the feeling inside – it is like being in another Liepāja. So next time you visit Liepāja – cake or some pasta stop is a must in Romas Dārzs. Or even date with coffee and book. Most preferably when evening comes and the light in the squares get up.
