Vegan and raw. The Beginnings
It was many years ago when one raw food restaurant opened in Riga – the first one. It was a kind of miracle, where wheat grass juice was squeezed with a slow juicer, just like the ginger shots, and cakes did not have any eggs, flour, or sugar. It was and unknown and strange concept. Years have passed and the owners are the same, but the concept is more a raw – plus vegan, plus healthy. They still have their long, famous raw Snickers and Bounty bars and they sell great salt, squeeze juices and make raw chips and granolas, but they also make those people happy who want a place to be clean and warm (especially when its -15 outside).
So today, although there are a few small places who think about this, Beginnings restaurant is the one you should start with. With three locations in Riga, my favourite, and apparently the favourite of many, is the one on Barona Street. Large, with big windows, modern and stylish, it has everything you need. Warm lentil soup, juicy tofu burgers with plum sauce and crispy sweet potatoes, chickpea tortilla wraps filled with hummus, and still the same old, crazy ginger shot. Although the basic menu stars the same, with four burgers, soups, and a warm rice bowl served with broccoli and avocado, the daily and weekly menu changes all the time. Latte here is served with quinoa, rice or coconut milk (or any other daily milk), juices are pressed in a slow juicer, and the big fridge full of sweets are all gluten-, egg-, flour- and sugar-free. I still cannot resist the Snickers bar or marzipan balls – every time – just like I always buy some of their raw granolas and chips to go.
So if you are ever wondering where to eat healthy, meat- and fish-free, raw, or a bit warmer, then you know what to look for. And grab some of their protein bars to go – especially great when you travel.
