Abu Hassan

It’s not a restaurant, but a very good cafeteria. They open at 11:00, make enough humus for one day, and close when the humus is gone, which can be anywhere between 13:00 un 15:00. After eating the humus, a nice, long walk is a must, because you will feel like you’re going to burst because you ate everything on your plate. You’ll sit at a table with a stranger, but maybe you’ll wait to get your humus first. It’s served with green tatbileh sauce, raw onions, and pita. The humus is drizzled with spicy oil in some places, mild in others and sprinkled with herbs and chick peas. Address: Ha-Dolfin St 1, Tel Aviv

Ovad’s Sabich

I walked for two hours in the hot sun, up and down hills and over bridges to get here, and if I had to, I would walk even longer to get to Ovad, which serves up the best sabich bread in the city – and some even say, the country. Here, sabich is served with deep-fried eggplant (obligatory) and anything else you desire. I was told you must have it with everything, and I did. I recommend you do too. Address: Sirkin St 7, Giv’atayim, Tel Aviv

Hanan Margilan

Walking along the streets that have more motorcycles, which need to be repaired, than people, you may doubt the need for that which you desire, but don’t really know. You may still have doubts when you open the door to Hanan Margilan, but all doubts disappears with the first bite of a lamb kebab. You forget that the world has expensive restaurants and what time it is. Time stands still here – it is determined by the food. Bukharan Jewish cuisine is served here and everything here is divine, but please start with the lamb. Address: Mesilat Yesharim St 15, Tel Aviv; www.facebook.com/restmargilan

Dilek’s Turkish eatery

It’s hard to get in the door and equally hard to place your order – there’s not much room. When you get your borek, you understand why. Borek here is served only with cheese or greens and it is heaven itself – crunchy on top and juicy inside. Try the baklava and Israel’s most popular desert – malabi.
